Jewelry for my group

I am a Reiki Master Teacher. I have been very blessed with many fine students who have helped me discover more about life and its meaning. Some of my students have become my/our best friends. What a wonderful benefit!

One of the things that I have discovered in my studies is that I sometimes have to really work at being out in public – that I have really been an introverted person who as made herself to be more outgoing. Being with other people is hard, not because I don’t like them, but because it is just an energy thing. Group work is something else though, it is never the four letter type of work that means hard or boring. By the way, for me, work has always been a good word – it means life. There are five of us (myself, husband, another couple and my "twin") that are my core group and the work we do is life and joy.

What makes us a group? I guess because we have declared it out loud to ourselves and to each other. Mind you, it isn’t one of those high school type groups where we whisper and talk about others and mock them. We mostly just mock each other and ourselves *grin*. It feels really comfortable to be with each other and we are family. We call each other for help and support which also includes bottom-line truth stuff too.

Anyway, twin & I were out shopping at a bead store one day and she found a pendant made out of Gaspeite. Pretty and it was calling to her (you bead and crystal and stone people know what I am talking about), so we looked up the metaphysical meaning to see why. It was a must have, but I talked her out of getting it because I thought it was too pricey. I figured we could find the stones on Ebay and buy it for the whole group. We also decided to include another metaphysical stone, Sugilite because of its properties, and Flourite because it went with the Sugilite, and because Flourite is another must have kind of stone.

Here are four of the bracelets, and four pendants. I don’t have twin’s set because I gave them to her before I took the photo – dang! As an aside, I realize that the jewelry doesn’t scream masculinity. However, my husband and my male friend aren’t afraid of wearing jewelry. Besides, this is more where it in private vs. out there in the big public kind of jewelry.

Here are the metaphysical meanings:

Gaspeite (Mint Green) is a recently discovered stone in the western hemisphere, found in 1966 and was initially a discarded byproduct of nickel sulfide mining. Emotionally, it reduces distress and brings assurance. It also reduces ignorance, particularly emotional ignorance. It also helps attracts friends and friendship. Aboriginals use gaspeite to bring visions and grant success. Metaphysically, Gaspeite is best known for helping to bring spirituality into every day life. It brings good fortune and helps prevent loss. Physically gaspeite has been used for heart problems, lungs, and gallbladder. Gaspeite is primarily related to the heart chakra. Susan’s note: I made the pendants to wear at our heart chakra, so each person would string it on the necklace of their own choosing.

Sugilite (Large dark purple & small opaque lighter purple), also known as Luvulite is a third eye activator. Opens the connection between mind and body. It attunes one to their mental body to see what is creating the physical problem and in doing so, gain the healing power necessary to balance the physical body. Helps spiritually oriented individuals deal with the sometimes overwhelming negative energies present on the planet. A stone to use for children to keep the innocence, wisdom, and magic of the child’s world as they grow into adulthood. Also used to re-awaken those qualities in adults. Helps one connect with their own inner light. Helps cancer patients release the old angers, resentments, fears, guilt, frustrations, sorrows, or insecurities that manifested the disease.

Enhances functions of pineal, pituitary and adrenal glands. Activates and balances brain hemispheres. Strengthens heart. Aids physical healing and purification of bodily systems. Emotional balancer, reduces stress. Brings higher spiritual awareness into physical reality. Enhances sensitivity. Strong protective qualities. Excellent for meditation. Enhances channeling abilities.

Flourite (small clear to dark purple – transparent/translucent) is here to teach us to be inter-dimensional. Used to advance the mind from one mental reality to the next. Aids in fighting mental disorder and gaining spiritual awakening. Balances positive and negative aspects of the mind. Cleaner, grounds excess energies and helps one work with large amounts of energy. Very focusing. Aids in increasing the assimilation of Life Force into the body. Source of fluoride, strengthens bone and dental tissue.

Strengthens teeth and bones. Improves absorption of vital nutrients. Beneficial for blood vessels and spleen. Grounds excess energy. Excellent for advancement of mind, greater concentration, meditation. Helps one grasp higher, more abstract concepts. Facilitates inter-dimensional communication. Powerful healer. Works with chakras and attitudes according to color of stone.

The color of fluorite (fluorspar) varies considerably. Common colors include colorless (transparent), green, and a wide range of shades of purple. Yellow and blue fluorite are also available. Less usual colors of this crystal include magenta, pink, red and black. The transparency of fluorite ranges from transparent to translucent.

I started up an afghan for Dad for his Christmas gift. I decided that although a washable item would be really, really, nice, I wanted to do something that was warm and light and just hang the washing factor. So I went with KnitPicks fingering weight 100% wool yarn. It is called Palette and what I used for my Peggle afghan.

I decided to do blues, with navy being the dominant color. Here it is:

ripple afghan for dad in a pattern called Waterfall

This is another pattern from the 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns book, number 148 called Waterfall. Nice pattern, with no errors. Unfortunately, I did a gauge swatch using one of the blues vs. the navy. The navy is thinner, and I am finding whatever yarn you use to start really sets the size tone for the whole project. I was trying for 45 inches wide, and it is 51. Ooooooooops. That means I should order another ball of the navy. That might be tricky, because I purchased it back in July. I have an email into KnitPicks to see if they still have that lot number. I may need to call tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

For those of you who might be getting tired of all the crochet and ripples, I promise I will have some knitting content soon. I want to knit up a couple of scarves for a donation/auction. I may be working on that next week.

I’m finished with August

I’m finished with August. The afghan for August that is. And it is only the 6th! Whoo!

Here is Storm Clouds:

afghan for my brother - Storm Clouds pattern

The pattern is Storm Clouds (#63) from 200 Ripple Stitch Patterns, by Jan Eaton. I used 3 colors of Red Heart Super Saver. Black, Grey Heather and a beige with brown, grey and black flecks called Aran Fleck. The black came in 7 oz skeins, the grey and fleck in 5 oz skeins. I used a full 2 skeins and about half of a 3rd skein for the grey and aran fleck, and only a bit more of the 3rd skein of black. I think I might have been able to get by with only 2 skeins of the black had I not started over and then needed longer tails for connecting. Here is a better shot of the colors:

I did 12 repeats of the 3 colors, plus an extra 2 rows of black to kind of balance it out (it started with black). Used a size J hook and it worked out to be about 46 x 68.5 inches. I thought it would be about 51, but I guess it sucked up a bit. If I were to do this pattern again, I would have the ends have 2 bunches before the turn chain instead of the 3 as it directs in the instructions. Here is a detail shot of the edge and where I went wrong (in my mind).

But it is just one of those preference things, although it would have meant not having to buy 3 more skeins = cheaper, it would have been a bit more narrow. It is meant to be a one person afghan, so it works very well. Guinevere has already give it her 4 paw approval.

Onward to the next afghan. I will share the plans as soon as they are ready.
